High Tech Travel By John Lamkin
Here are three easy-to-use "tech" items that will help you travel
lighter--dump your laptop!
Wherever we go in the world we find Internet--cafes, hotels, kiosks, friend's houses.
Here's what you want to take care of all your needs on the road
(communicating and business that is.}
1. A small pocket-size "computer"--the Cruzer--priced $30 and up,
2. Skype Internet telephony--download free,
3. and some handy little computer programs--PortableApps--free--that fit
on your Cruzer or other flash/thumb drive.
Go to your nearest Internet place, plug your Cruzer into the
computer's USB connector and you are ready to play and work. This
setup only works for computers with Windows--which means most of
the computers you will find on the road, in the world.
The Skype Internet phone calls are free to anyone in the world
that also has Skype. It works on most types of computers. If you
want to call land and mobile phones (2.1 cents/min. and up), you
start a tab with Skype ($10 minimum). If you want to receive phone
calls from people who don't have Skype, you buy a local phone
number from Skype ($12 for 3 months--includes voicemail). Numbers
are available in the UK, USA and several other countries. Skype
works best with broadband Internet. Your Skype contacts and phone
book are available wherever you go--just log on to Skype. You
might want to carry a small microphone/earphone set for computers
that don't have these capabilities.
You can find these things online by doing a search for the names
or checking
www.Amazon.com,
www.Buy.com,
www.Cyberguys.com,
www.PortableApps.com &
www.Skype.com.
